Thorough Examinations for Lifting Equipment in the Workplace

Thorough Examinations for Lifting Equipment in the Workplace

It is the employers' duty to ensure that the forklift trucks that his/her operators use are safe

It may surprise a few to learn that a LOLER inspection is not just a quick ‘once over’ your trucks – Since the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER 98) it has been a mandatory requirement for companies to ensure their forklift trucks are properly maintained and in sound working order. There are also legal requirements under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment 1998 (PUWER 98)

‘These Regulations place duties on people and companies who own, operate or have control over lifting equipment to have them regularly inspected to ensure that they meet with all health and safety regulations.’

No one reading this would drive their car to work without an MOT; similarly a Thorough Examination is a comprehensive safety inspection for your forklift truck, which covers both sets of regulations and which has to be undertaken by a Competent Person. It gives the owner/user the reassurance and peace of mind that the condition of your lifting equipment is not putting your workforce or the general public at risk.

These assessments, which must be undertaken at least once a year (the actual frequency depends on a number of factors) are not expensive and are quickly carried out by highly trained and accredited engineers, who have years of industry knowledge and can pinpoint any items on your trucks that need attention to comply.

Lights, wheels, tyres etc. are also assessed for their condition and suitability to the environment in which they are operating and the company is then issued with a ‘Report of Thorough Examination’ to demonstrate that its fleet is in sound working order.

Amvar Handling Solutions is accredited under the CFTS Quality Assurance Procedural Code to conduct Thorough Examinations for all types of lifting equipment and can organise a visit to get your fleet checked out and brought up to the required standards.
